This new NSFC Fellowship scheme was launched in 2009 to encourage excellent international young researchers to work for six or twelve months in a Chinese university or research institute.
This is starting as a pilot project, with eligibility limited to universities or institutes in China affiliated to the Ministry of Education (MoE) or Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
The Fellowship offers research funding support of RMB 100,000 (about 000) for visits of six months, or RMB 200,000 (about 8000) for 12 months. This funding is for research expenses only. The host organisation is responsible for covering living costs, insurance, research facilities etc.
All candidates are recommended by the Chinese host organisation. They must have obtained a PhD, have more than three years of basic research or post-doctoral experience, and must be aged under 35 as of 1 January of the year of application.
The call for applications for 2010 Fellowships was announced on 28 August 2009 at www.nsfc.gov.cn/Portal0/InfoModule_396/28186.htm (in Chinese). There are two rounds.
The First Round application deadline is 31 December 2009 for applications submitted by the Chinese host organization, and 31 January 2010 for the subsequent individual application. The First Round covers six-month Fellowships taking place between 1 July 2010 and 31 December 2010, or 12-month Fellowships taking place between 1 July 2010 and 30 June 2011.
The Second Round deadline is 31 May 2010 for applications submitted by the Chinese host organization, and 30 June 2010 for the subsequent individual application. The Second Round covers six-month Fellowships taking place between 1 January 2011 and 30 June 2011, or 12-month Fellowships taking place between 1 January 2011 and 31 December 2011.
Interested young scientists should consult their Chinese host institution about the possibility of applying for a Fellowship.
