The Triple Helix Conference 2019 will be a first in Africa, bringing together local and international researchers, policy makers and practitioners to discuss how to effect positive change through research collaborations, policy initiatives and collaborating with business and civil society. The Triple Helix model presents an opportunity to achieve innovation outcomes for the socio-economic good through the collaboration with multi-stakeholders within academia, industry and government.
#THC2019 will be focused on themes that relate the Triple Helix to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs Agenda 2030) and the AU Agenda 2063. Case studies, research articles, keynotes, master classes will all form part of an interactive environment to discuss and inspire change with these themes.

A major projected outcome of this conference is to explore this connection and develop a legacy project to make a lasting contribution to the African continent.
The Triple Helix concept was initiated in the 1990s by Etzkowitz and Leydesdorff. They analyzed a shift from a predominant industry-government dyad in an Industrial Society to a triadic university industry-government relationship in the Knowledge Society. The potential for innovation and economic development in a Knowledge Society resides in a more prominent role of the university in innovation and entrepreneurship, and in the hybridisation of elements of institutional spheres and actors. This generates new institutional and social formats for the production, transfer and utilization of knowledge.
